Music that Honors God–What it is not and what it is!

This past Sunday we had a guest speaker at church, Evangelist Dan Hadik.   He spoke on God honoring music.  His teaching on this subject went well with the post on 9 characteristics of godly music.  How important music is in the life of a believer!  May we make sure that our music honors the Lord.  Below is the outline that I got from his lesson or you can listen directly to the message HERE.

Godly Music

  1. What godly music is not

    1. It is not just a catchy melody

    2. It is not just nice stirring words

    3. It is not a sound, a blend, or a soloist – Something may sound or be sung beautifully, but that does not mean it is godly or has correct theology. The hymnbook is the theology of the layman.

    4. It is not emotions - Just because your emotions are moved does not mean your are listening to godly music

    5. It does not exalt man

    6. It does not predominantly affect the body – If you are satisfying your flesh, you cannot satisfy you spirit.

    7. It is not sensual in nature.

    8. It is not worldly. 1 John 2:15-16 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

    9. It does not contain wrong doctrine.

  1. What godly music is

    1. It honors God. Psalms 150:1-6 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

    2. It edifies the Christian spiritually, not emotionally Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

    3. It puts one in a spiritual mood. It prepares you for preaching or serving God. Are you tempted? Sing hymns. Are you discouraged? Sing hymns. Etc. e.g. David played for Saul 1 Samuel 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

    4. It teaches correct doctrine. Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

    5. It is secondary to preaching. 2 Timothy 4:1-2 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Some Things do not have an End

I love my family.  There are the only thing on earth you can take with you to eternity.  How important to share the gospel with all of them!  It is exciting to see my grand children, one by one come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior.  I look forward to the day when each one of them has been saved through the blood of Jesus Christ and I look forward to that great reunion in heaven.  You can be 100% sure!

9 Characteristics of a Christian’s Music

I love to listen and sit under the influence of Dr. Don Scovill, music chairman of Ambassador Baptist College and music director at our church, Maranatha Baptist Church of Shelby, NC. He has been teaching in Sunday School on music.  Last Sunday he gave us 9 characteristics of a Christian’s Music.  Truly, the music of a Christian ought to be different from that of the world. My music must show my changed life or regenerated experience.  If there is no change, then we have a defective salvation or perhaps, no salvation.  2Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. My music should show ownership. We are not our own.  We belong to Christ.  Be careful what you put into your body, mind, and soul.  Does it reflect the ownership of Christ? 1 Corinthians 6:19-20  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which y...
